What it takes to make a refuge for Idaho wildlife.

Diana Shafer is the Executive Director of Friends of Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge, an organization whose mission is “to promote, protect, and provide resources for Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge.”

Lake Lowell is a defining feature of Nampa with a rich history. It provides vital irrigation water, habitat for wildlife, and a cherished public space for recreation. As sapiocentric humans, it's easy to prioritize the people-focused uses of the lake — but the health and survival of humans depends on the health of our water, air, soil, plant, and animal life. The Wildlife Refuge puts this concept into action. Plus this topic is aligned with Rotary's focus area of protecting the environment!

The Friends of Deer Flat support the Refuge through local conservation efforts and community engagement. Their work complements the mission of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service by focusing on what the federal agency cannot always do: Fundraising, Friend-raising, and Advocacy.
